Until the end of the last century, the overriding priority during harvest was speed. The amount of work completed in the shortest possible time took precedence over the quality of the harvested crop. Over the past two decades, however, the agricultural sector has undergone a profound transformation. Increasing emphasis has been placed on preserving grain quality, forcing cereal growers and contractors alike to focus not only on productivity but also on maintaining crop integrity and cleanliness. Failure to do so can significantly reduce the market value of the harvest.

It is therefore no surprise that farmers and contractors have increasingly favored combines capable of combining high output with gentle crop handling. These two objectives lie at the heart of the Claas Trion range, a family of mid-class combines that, through the 700, 600, and 500 series, brings many of the technologies previously reserved for the German manufacturer’s flagship Lexion machines to medium-sized farming operations.

Foremost among these technologies is Claas’ patented APS threshing system, standard across the entire Trion range. The system incorporates three main components—an accelerator, a threshing drum, and a drum beater—which together separate up to 20 percent more grain than a conventional threshing system.

This performance is further enhanced by hydraulic concave adjustment and an overload protection system. The former allows the operator to adjust concave clearance directly from the cab as harvesting conditions change, while the latter protects the threshing components from foreign objects by hydraulically opening the concaves whenever excessive pressure is detected.

These engineering solutions are designed to maximize separation efficiency. On the flagship Trion 700 models, they are complemented by Claas’ well-established APS Hybrid system. This configuration employs a single rotor on the Trion 720, 730, and 740 models and twin rotors on the Trion 750 and 760, increasing harvesting capacity by as much as 20 percent without increasing power consumption, while ensuring exceptionally gentle handling of the grain regardless of crop type.

Performance is further enhanced by the fact that the accelerator, threshing drum, and beater are driven through a central variator that synchronizes their operating speeds, while adjustable concave elements allow the threshing process to be optimized for different crop conditions.

The Trion 500 and Trion 600 series, by contrast, rely on conventional straw walkers. The former features five straw walkers, while the latter is equipped with six, each incorporating four drop steps. This provides total separation areas exceeding six square meters on the Trion 500 series and nearly seven and a half square meters on the Trion 600.

In both configurations, the APS Walker separation system is further enhanced by the MultiFinger Separation System (MSS), a finger-equipped separation drum that intensively agitates the crop to improve grain separation even under particularly demanding harvesting conditions.

Common to every Trion model is the Jet Stream cleaning system. Depending on the model, this incorporates either a six- or eight-stage turbine fan combined with a dual ventilated cleaning step. The result is a high-pressure airflow across the cleaning sieves, which can be adjusted directly from the cab. The system may also incorporate the Auto Slope function, automatically increasing or decreasing airflow when operating uphill or downhill while simultaneously adapting fan performance to forward speed.

Under these operating conditions, Trion combines also benefit from Claas’ 3D cleaning system on straw walker models and the more advanced 4D cleaning system on hybrid versions, both of which maintain excellent grain cleanliness when harvesting on sloping terrain.

Configured in this way, the Trion range is designed to deliver maximum harvesting efficiency under every field condition. Supporting this performance are Cummins six-cylinder B6.7 and L9 engines, with displacements of 6.7 and 8.9 liters respectively, powering the Trion 500 and 600 series as well as the single-rotor Trion 720, 730, and 740 models. The twin-rotor Trion 750 and 760 are instead powered by MAN six-cylinder D26 engines with a displacement of 12.4 liters.

Maximum engine output ranges from 258 hp on the entry-level Trion 520 to 435 hp on the Trion 740. Power rises further to 466 hp on the Trion 750 and 507 hp on the flagship Trion 760.

These performance levels are achieved while minimizing fuel consumption thanks to the combined action of the Dynamic Power and Dynamic Cooling systems. Together, these technologies can reduce fuel consumption by up to 10 percent compared with conventional industry standards.

Dynamic Power continuously adjusts engine speed and load according to actual harvesting requirements, while Dynamic Cooling regulates cooling fan speed according to thermal demand, reducing auxiliary power consumption by approximately 15 kW and contributing to an additional reduction in fuel use of around 10 percent.

Maximum efficiency under every harvesting condition is further supported by grain tanks ranging in capacity from 8,000 to 13,500 liters. Productivity can be enhanced even further by delegating machine adjustments to the CEMOS Automatic system, an onboard optimization platform available in three versions: CEMOS Auto, CEMOS Auto Plus, and CEMOS Auto Professional.

These progressively more advanced software packages automate an increasing number of machine settings, allowing harvesting capacity to increase by as much as 20 percent while consistently maintaining optimum grain quality.

Configured in this way, Trion combines effectively become autonomous harvesting machines, allowing operators to focus almost exclusively on steering and field guidance while working from redesigned cabs specifically developed to reduce fatigue during long harvesting days.

To improve operator comfort, the new cabs incorporate numerous modern conveniences, including Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity through a dedicated 6.75-inch display, additional storage compartments integrated into the left-hand front pillar, and a compressed-air connection complete with an air gun to simplify and speed up post-harvest cleaning operations.
